Hey Khatzumoto!

You are my hero!
I'm japanese but I live in Brazil and, believe it or not, I only know a few words in japanese. I tried several times to learn japanese by myself, or asking my dad for some help. Nothing worked. Some years ago I came across your website and got all excited about learning japanese again, but I lost interest soon (again). But now I'm BACK and I won't give up!
And about the cleaning-my-own-room thing? It totally fits me. I live alone now and I get upset even angry when I look at my messy room. But I just can't manage to clean it. (actually I was thinking about it right before reading your article) So, as I said, you're my hero! Your advices works not only for learning japanese but for making me be master of my own affairs! lol

Thanks a lot!

I was vaguely coming to a similar conclusion as some things were floating around in my head. Thoughts from and based off of what I heard after watching Demetri Martin's "If I" show. Yeah, it's "comedy" but I found it really interesting. I hadn't formulated the ideas into words just yet, but they were still there, and it's fascinating to see a completely different angle of getting to the same end.

But these variables are all new and unheard of to me, and the way you brought them together, I'm actually excited. Even if I don't get anything significant done as a result of this, I have no doubt that it will help me a lot in life - with some of the most difficult things. "Getting things done" has always been a huge weakness of mine, starting projects and never finishing anything.

So I'm not sure what words to use to thank you, but I wanted to let you know I really appreciate this. Even if I don't learn Japanese in the time I want, even if I don't accomplish anything "real," your writing is so interesting and easy to get through and this stuff really reaches home. So regardless of what happens, thank you for at least that.

I like to save certain thoughts with notepad, so I just thought I'd paste what I got from the show I mentioned (which was then backed and elaborated on by this), in case anybody cares:

"your actions and decisions over time, all the little if's over time, define and make up who you are
you don't just set out to do or learn something, and return to your life of not learning or doing anything
you get there only by walking there, one step at a time
if this walking isn't a consistent part of your life, you won't cover the distance, it's that simple

forcing it is one way, but it's also a horrible way
there are other ways to be found"

And again, thank you for showing me that there are other ways :D (It's what converts this from an incomplete, depressing thought, to a meaningful and exciting one. Even knowing there are other ways to be found is not nearly the same as being given directly a number of specific ways, and concepts and variables to explore more on your own)

[...] To be fair to your opponents, you are not exactly a shining example of success in your chosen language acquisition method…yet. But then again, how could you be — you’re just a “baby”. Unable to demonstrate the validity of what you’re saying, the typical instinct might be to go pull up some articles and shove them in everyone’s face with a triumphant “SEE?!!”. Resist the urge. You will still lose the argument. And your time. The same people who now bait with: “there’s no research to support your claims”, when shown good research, will switch to: “So what? That research is of dubious veracity, Mister!”. This arguing thing is not a winnable game. [...]

Wow...I am SOOOOOOOO happy that I've found out about this blog. Since I was little I truly wanted to learn the language but I never knew where or how to get started. But reading your blogs made me want to get started more than ever and have to motivation to stick with it. I just hope the years of watching anime/j-drama and listening/singing to all my favorite j-pop music (which is alot lol) well make my journey just a tiny little bit easier. Thanks alot Khatz! ^.^
